Top 5 Local SA Beaches
Take a trip out to some of South Australia’s most popular beaches for some fun in the sun, alfresco dining, seasonal events and more.
Glenelg
This iconic beachside suburb of Adelaide is a year-round go to for locals and tourists, easily reachable by an easy and short tram ride from the city. Along Jetty Road, enjoy the array of shopping, bustling cafes and restaurants or the nearby Holdfast Marina for more ocean view dining. During the summer months, head to the Sunday Sunset Markets or the Moseley Beach Club, situated on the beach, for sunset cocktails, soothing tunes and that all important holiday vibe.
Port Noarlunga
Historic Port Noarlunga is just 30 kilometres south of Adelaide. This scenic local beachside spot is perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling and, in particular, diving, forming part of the self-guided Aquatic Trail for divers. Off-shore is the Port Noarlunga Reef which is part of the Encounter Marine Park and home to over 200 species of marine plants. Head to Gawler Street for casual eateries, local pubs and unique shopping, plus, view the several state-heritage buildings including Sauerbier House, steeped in SA’s early history.
Brighton
Another of SA’s best local beaches is Brighton Beach, being very popular with locals thanks to its pristine beach, picturesque jetty and main street, Jetty Road, home to coastal shopping, relaxed cafes, casual dining, ice-cream shops and is ‘the place’ for a beach brunch. Enjoy a scenic coastal walk/cycle heading north along the 4.2 kilometre path linking to nearby Glenelg Beach, or the 2 kilometre path south to the nearby beach suburb of Seacliff.
Henley
This favoured spot is teeming with superb restaurants, ocean front bars and a beautiful, long stretch of beach. Browse the boutiques, grab some fish and chips and find a spot on the grass or sand and settle in to watch a stunning sunset. Follow the lines out the door from the parlours for a gourmet ice-cream and stroll along the esplanade or jetty or, if you are feeling energetic, walk the Linear Path right into Adelaide.
Port Elliot
Located around an hours’ drive south from the city, is the beautiful seaside town of Port Elliot, home to postcard perfect Horseshoe Bay. Relax on the sandy shores and shaded grassed area behind or walk the dramatic coastline trail for breathtaking views. Meander the charming streets’ stylish homeware shops, intriguing antique stores and join the queue at the famous Port Elliot Bakery and be spoilt for choice with the renowned savoury and sweet treats synonymous with SA! Enjoy a relaxing lunch or dinner at the Flying Fish Café for great seafood, relaxing atmosphere and amazing ocean views of course!
